President Clinton's part in the Octber 29th event
These are the events leading up to Saddam's decision on Oct 29th to kick the US inspectors out of Iraq.
June 21, 1997
President Clinton and Russian President Boris
Yeltsin agree to consider tougher sanctions against Iraq unless U.N. weapons
inspectors certify in October 1998 that Baghdad is fully cooperating.
Oct. 7, 1997 U.N. weapons inspectors report Iraq still refuses to disclose
full details of its
banned weapons program and is imposing new
restrictions on inspections.
Oct. 23, 1997 The U.N. Security Council threatens Iraq with trade ban
unless it cooperates
with inspectors. Russia, China, France, Kenya,
Egypt abstain in the voting.
By October 29, 1997 Saddam had come up with his own plan to stop
them.
*Interesting to note that even though Russia helped to start this mess back in June that by Oct 23 they were abstaining from voting on the very same trade ban sanctions.
