A Time Line Given to Daniel
Concerning the
Kings of the North and South

This section on the identity of these kings was first written in the spring of 1991 when
the Lord helped me understand these things for His purpose.

By the time you finish reading this vision of Daniel you will understand that the last days empire is a revived Islamic empire

This vision takes us from the first king of the North in the time of Daniel up to the last King of the North, who is the leader of the last days beast.

Daniel had been beseeching the Lord for three weeks for an answer and after three weeks an angel came and gave him this time line. A time line that would go from the time of Darius the Mead, a king of the north in Daniel's time, all the way to the last king of the North, one that we call antichrist in our time.
The Lord led me to match the verses to the actual history that took place so that we might see which land which the leader of the last days beast will emerge from. It is important to remember that the "he" in these verses refers only to Kings who ruled in the North (from an area between the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers) and to the King of the South, (who was the ruler from Egypt).

This prophecy is  a time-line.  It begins with the last of the Median-Persian kings, which are then conquered by the Grecian/Macedonian Empire under Alexander the Great. This empire was divided into satraps between 22 of Alexanders generals, but in the Ram and Goat vision God centers in on the four most powerful of this group.

At some point in time it was decided  by scholors who these four generals should be and included Lysimachus of Thrace instead of the satrap of Parthia as the last horn. . But Partthia became one of the most powerful empires, not Thrace under Lysimachus.  I believe the true four horn dynasties were; Ptolemy dynasty in the South (Egypt), and Seleucid dynasty in the North (Babylon), Antipater-Cassander in the west (Macedonia, Greece-Thrace) and one of the longest lasting empires of the time, Philip-Phrataphernes (Parthia).  This prophecy lists the exploits of the generations of two of these generals. Seleucus Dynasty (Babylon) and Ptolemy Dynasty (Egypt).  This is to show us that in the end times a revived empire will be a king of the North, just like all of the former kings listed in this prophecy.  All of these kings  ruled over Israel from the Babylon area,  and so will the last king of the North. The lands of all of these former kings are now Islamic countries.

Most Christians, like myself,  before I finally brushed the dust off my encyclopedias (pre-internet) and began to look up these kings and placed the kings in their generation to the scripture, skipped over the first 30 verses of this prophecy and began with  verse 11:31 with the Abomination of Desolation.  When doing it this way then a person can apply this to Antiochus IV of the Seleucid dynasty who set up an abomination in the Temple before Christ was even born. Antiochus IV is listed in the kings by his exploits in verses 21-38.   Verse 31-39 have also been applied to Rome by many bible historians, but Rome was never a King of the North.  The most popular is to apply it to the future antichrist who will put a stop to the sacrifices in the future.

The prophecy itself tells us that none of these are right.  The best way to understand it is to start from the end and go backwards.    This prophecy is the same as the description of the 7 heads in Revelation 18.  Five kings/kingdoms/heads have fallen in John's time. One is (the 6th) and one is yet to come (the 7th head)  and then there will be an 8th head (a revived empire/kingdom of one of the former empires/kingdoms)  Dan 12:1 is the resurrection of the dead which takes place at the return of Christ to gather all that are His to Him.  So if we go back to verses 40-44 we see the king of the North of the end days. It is the revived empire (8th head) of the end days.  Before this starting at verse 31-39 is the 7th head, the abomination of Desolation will be done at the hands of this empire.  Before this are the kings of the 3rd, 4th 5th and 6th heads of the Grecian empire. (The leopard beast of the 4 beasts of Daniel and Ram and goat vision also tell of the Grecian empire.) Before these were the last of the Media-Persian kings (second head)  The first head, Babylon, and its kings are told about earlier in the book of Daniel. So we are being shown all 7 heads of the beast of Rev 13 in this time-line vision given to Daniel and also the 8th head (vrs 40-44) a revived empire of one of the former 7 heads as told about in Rev 17. .

Much of the revelation given to John were first told to us in the OT. The book of Revelation is confirming the old prophecies.

The only kings of the North to rule over Israel from the Babylon area after the time of John was the Islamic empire from Damascus followed by Baghdad,  for 500 hundred years. This makes them the 7th head and the empire that set up the abomination of desolation in verse 11:31.

It also makes the Islamic Empire the last, and only, peoples to live and rule over the whole Middle East, (which encompassed all of the lands of the former heads/empires). To be the ruler of the 8th head, the leader must come from the Babylon area just like the former kings of the north. Today that is Syria/Iraq.

If you don't want to read a lot of past history, but still want to understand the importance of the time-line prophecy then you can scroll down and begin reading at Verse 21.
.
The kingdom of Babylon was taken over by the Media-Persians who took possession of the kingdom and ruled over Israel from Babylon.
Dan 10:1
In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a thing was revealed unto Daniel,
.559-530 BC: Cyrus II The Great,  first king of Persia, (ends 70 year excile of the Jews)
.
Dan. 11: 2
And now I will tell you the truth. Behold, three more kings are going to arise in Persia.
530-521 BC: Reign of Artaxerxes (Ahasuerus in Hebrew), Cambyses II

522-522 BC: There was a usurper for 10 months in 522. He faked being Smerdis, Cyrus' son, who had been killed.
522-485 BC: Reign of Darius I, the Great
.
Dan. 11: 2 continues
Then a fourth will gain more riches than them all; as soon as he becomes strong through his riches, he will arouse the whole Empire of Greece.

This would be speaking of  Darius I, the Great, (522-485) Invaded Greece in 490 BC

( see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Marathon#Sources for information on this war)

In my Opinion the remaining Persin kings, until the fall of the Empire, are not listed by God in this prophecy, only those that ruled before the Empire of Greece is stirred up against Media-Persia.

(Note: The next king, 465-424 BC: Reign of Artaxerxes I, Longimanus, in his 7th year issued the decree for Ezra go to Israel (457-8 BC) to rebuld the city, followed by Nehemiah in the 20th year (444-5 BC) of this king.) to rebuild the walls.

.
Dan. 11: 3-4
And a mighty King will arise, and will rule with great authority and do as he pleases. But as soon as he has arisen, his kingdom will be broken up and parceled out towards the four points of the compass, not to his descendants, nor according to his authority which he wielded; for his sovereignty will be uprooted and given to others besides them.
.
This was Alexander The Great, King of the Grecian Empire. When he took over Babylon he also made it his palace and ruled from there and died there, making him also a king of the North.

Dan 11:4
"But as soon as he has arisen, his kingdom will be broken up and parceled out toward the four points of the compass, though not to his {own} descendants, nor according to his authority which he wielded, for his sovereignty will be uprooted and {given} to others besides them.

When he died his kingdom was not passed on to his son, which he had through a Persian woman, but to his Generals (Princes). Two of these Generals became very great, Ptolemy, who took over Egypt in the South, and Seleucus I, who took the area of old Babylon, founding the city of Seleucia on the River Tigris. His kingdom stretched from Syria to India, and, because of this, he is sometimes referred to as the king of Syria. Seleucus I, became the next king of the North.

The Seleucid empire at its greatest extent stretched from Thrace to India and included almost all of Alexander the Great's conquests except Egypt. Seleucus, one of Alexander's generals, became satrap of Babylonia in 321 BC. In a prolonged power struggle between the Successors (Diadochoi) as they were called, Ptolemy (Egypt), Lysimachos (Thrace), Cassander (Macedon and Greece) and Seleucus ganged up on Antigonas (Asia) and defeated him at the battle of Ipsus in 301 BC. Seleucus was assassinated by the disgruntled son of Ptolemy in 281 BC. The kingdom was a major center of Hellenistic culture which maintained the pre-eminence of Greek customs and manners over the Middle East.
.
Dan. 11: 5-6
"Then the king of the South will grow strong, along with {one} of his princes who will gain ascendancy over him and obtain dominion; his domain {will be} a great dominion {indeed.}  After some years they will form an alliance, and the daughter of the king of the South will come to the king of the North to carry out a peaceful arrangement. But she will not retain her position of power, nor will he remain with his power, but she will be given up, along with those who brought her in and the one who sired her as well as he who supported her in those times.
.
Verse 6 begins with Ptolemy II king(309-246 BC) (south) who gave his daughter, Bernice, as wife to Seleucus's son, Antiochus II (north). This made her next in line to be Queen of the Seleucus Kingdom. But within a few years Antiochus' former wife had her killed, and her infant son, and then also had Antiochus II himself killed.
.
Dan. 11: 7-8
But one of the descendants of her line will arise in his place, and he will come against their army and enter the fortress of the king of the North, and he will deal with them and display great strength. :8 Also their gods with their metal images and their precious vessels of silver and gold he will take into captivity to Egypt, and he on his part will refrain from attacking the king of the North for some years.
.
But one of Bernice's descendants, Ptolemy III, avenged her death as we see in verse 7-8 as he not only defeats the king of the North but also brings back the riches into Egypt.
.
Dan. 11: 9;
Then the latter will enter the realm of the king of the South, but will return to his own land.
.
The "latter" being the North in the last verse. This Northern king was Seleucus II attacked Egypt but was not successful.
.
Dan. 11: 10
"And his sons will mobilize and assemble a multitude of great forces; and *one of them will keep coming and overflow and pass through, that he may again wage war up to his very fortress".
.
These were the two sons of Seleucus II, namely Seleucus III (226-223)and his brother Antiochus III (223-187 BC) .They were the next generations of Kings of the North that attacked the Southern kingdom.
The next 9 verses describe this war:
.
Dan. 11: 11-12
The king of the South will be enraged and go forth and fight with the king of the North. Then the latter will raise a great multitude, but that multitude will be given into the hand of the former. :12 When the multitude is carried away, his heart will be lifted up, and he will cause tens of thousands to fall; yet he will not prevail.
.
The king of the South was Ptolemy V.
.
Dan. 11: 13-14
For the king of the North will again raise a greater multitude than the former, and after an interval of some years he will press on with a great army and much equipment. :14 Now in those times many will rise up against the king of the South; the violent ones among your people will also lift themselves up in order to fulfill the vision, but they will fall down.
.
Antiochus III brought in Philip, the king of Macedonia, and his armies to help defeat Ptolemy IV and Ptolemy V but this was unsuccessful.
.
Dan. 11: 15-16
Then the king of the North will come, cast up a siege ramp and capture a well-fortified city; and the forces of the South will not stand their ground, not even their choicest troops, for there will be no strength to make a stand.
:16 But he who comes against him will do as he pleases, and no one will be able to withstand him; he will also stay for a time in the Beautiful Land, with destruction in his hand.
.
Antiochus III was soldier of great ability. Between 212 to 205 he conquered Jerusalem from Ptolemy V along with his entire empire outside of Egypt. Antiochus's newly captured territory included Judaea and Jerusalem.
.
Dan. 11: 17
He will set his face to come with the power of his whole kingdom, bringing with him a proposal of peace which he will put into effect; he will also give him the daughter of women to ruin it. But she will not take a stand for him or be on his side.
.
Antiochus III sought to bring peace between Syria and Egypt (under duress by Rome) by giving his daughter, Cleopatra to marry Ptolemy V Epiphanies of Egypt. Although Antiochus III hoped to destroy the land of Egypt through his daughter, he did not succeed because she always sided with her husband Ptolemy V
(Note: This was not the famous Cleopatra; she was number 7.)
.
Dan. 11: 18-19
Then he will turn his face to the coastlands and capture many. But a commander will put a stop to his scorn against him; moreover, he will repay him for his scorn. :19 So he will turn his face toward the fortresses of his own land, but he will stumble and fall and be found no more.
.
Antiochus III began attacking the coastland but Rome came against him and he lost quickly. He was later killed while sacking a temple in Persia.
.
Dan. 11: 20
Then in his place one will arise who will send an oppressor through the Jewel of his kingdom; yet within a few days he will be shattered, though neither in war nor in battle.
.
This was Seleucus IV. Rome got a foothold by taking his infant son and holding him hostage. Rome then demanded taxes in payment. They never returned his eldest son. Seleucus IV died of natural causes.

Note:Notice when it says "In his place" The word "place" means "estate, base", which means a new king of the same kingdom as the previous one mentioned in the prior verse. This is seen in vrs 7, 20, 21.
.
These verses below are the ones that cause the most misunderstanding among scholars.
.
Verses 21 through 28 only, are Antiochus IV (King 175-163 BC) But first I am putting up the verses about this same man that we read about in Chapter 8 in the vision of the Ram and the Goat.
.
Please compare the two so that you can see that this is the same man.

Excerpt from Ram and Goat vision:

Dan 8:11
It even magnified itself to be equal with the Commander of Hosts.
23«In the latter period of their rule (The 4 Kingdoms that came out of Greece), When the transgressors have run their course, A king will arise, Insolent and skilled in intrigue.24 His power will be mighty, but not by his own power, And he will destroy to an extraordinary degree and prosper and perform his will; He will destroy mighty men and the holy people. 25 And through his shrewdness He will cause deceit to succeed by his influence; And he will magnify himself in his heart, And he will destroy many while they are at ease.He will even oppose the Prince of princes,But he will be broken without human agency.

This is the horn that comes out of one of the horns of the Grecian empire. It is Antiochus IV.  In the below verse we are again given a description of Antiochus IV as being listed as a king of the North.

Back to Daniel 11
Dan 8:11 Is the vision in symbolic form. But we are given the interprtation of this symbolism starting in verse 20.
.
Dan 11:21-24

21:"In his place a despicable person will arise, on whom the honor of kingship has not been conferred, but he will come in a time of tranquility and seize the kingdom by intrigue.  :22   "The overflowing forces will be flooded away before him and shattered, and also the prince of the covenant.  :23   "After an alliance is made with him he will practice deception, and he will go up and gain power with a small {force of} people.  :24   "In a time of tranquility he will enter the richest {parts} of the realm, and he will accomplish what his fathers never did, nor his ancestors; he will distribute plunder, booty and possessions among them, and he will devise his schemes against strongholds, but {only} for a time.

.

Dan 8--   --Dan 11
skilled in intrigue--   --seize the kingdom by intrigue.
but not by his own power--  --whom the honor of kingship has not been conferred
destroy many while they are at ease-- --come in a time of tranquility
even oppose the Prince of princes-- --shattered, and also the prince of the covenant

History of this ruler shows how he fulfilled these prophecies about him.

Antiochus IV, who was called Antiochus Epiphanies, was this "despicable" or "vile" person who came to the throne of Syria/Babylon in 175 BC. These prophesies fit him like a glove. "Epiphanies" means "illustrious" but he was only so in his own eyes, though he flattered many.

He gained the crown by a trick. He had his eldest brother's son, Demetrius, sent to Rome as a hostage, in exchange for himself. And when his brother was killed by Heliodorus, he took the crown for himself. He came in peaceably , pretending to be a regent for Demetrius, who remained as a hostage in Rome. There were no serious negotiations for his release.

in 170 BC, Antiochus launched a preemptive strike against Egypt, conquering all but Alexandria and capturing King Ptolemy. He had also conqered Israel.

Antiochus IV  replaced the High Priest, Onias III, (Prince of the covenant) with Jason as High Priest who began Hellenizing Jerusalem. Menelaus then bought the bid for high priest and later killed Jason, with the help of Antiochus IV, but Menelaus was of the line of Benjamin not Levi.  This is a false High Preist, an abomination to God. Menelaus desecrated the Temple, ransacing it and taking the sacred vessels.
According to the prophecy of the Ram and Goat this is when the regualar sacrifices ceased for 1150 days (2300 morning and evening sacrifices).

In 168 BC Antiochus once again invaded, a Egypt. He was threatened by Rome who simple drew a circle around him in the sand and said if you cross it Rome will come against you.

At this same time the Jews had heard .Antiochus IV died in a second war with Ptolemy and had a great celebration of his death. But Antiochus had not died, and on his return from Egypt he took revenge on them, and ransacked Jerusalem killing many Jews. He was considered a madman by the Jews also because of the torture that he did to the people that wouldn't eat pig meat.

Antiochus IV set up a statue of Zeus in the temple and prohibited Judaism for three years, but the Maccabees revolted and in 165 BC defeated Antiochus IV and restored the temple. Antiochus IV returned home and died on that campaign in Persia in 164 B.C. of disease.

He is famous for doing the very things listed in these verses and fits the scriptures here to a tee. The vision about the 2300 evenings and mornings (1150 days) is about Antiochus IV.

Daniel 11:31 is not about Antiochus IV because the times appointed to that event is 1335 days .

Dan 11:25-28
:25   "He will stir up his strength and courage against the king of the South with a large army; so the king of the South will mobilize an extremely large and mighty army for war; but he will not stand, for schemes will be devised against him.  :26   "Those who eat his choice food will destroy him, and his army will overflow, but many will fall down slain.  :27   "As for both kings, their hearts will be {intent} on evil, and they will speak lies {to each other} at the same table; but it will not succeed, for the end is still {to come} at the appointed time.  :28  "Then he will return to his land with much plunder; but his heart will be {set} against the holy covenant, and he will take action and {then} return to his {own} land.
.

Notice that the scripture says he will return to his land twice!
:28 "Then he will return to his land with much plunder;
but his heart will be {set} against the holy covenant, and he will take action
and {then} return to his {own} land
.

.Antiochus IV invaded Egypt twice. The first time (170 BC) he captured Ptolemy, and agreed to let him continue as King, but as his puppet. Alexandria thereupon chose Ptolemy's brother Ptolemy Euergetes as King. In Antiochus' absence, the two brothers agreed to rule jointly.  He then returned to his own land

He invaded Egypt again and this time took revenge on the Jews for celebrating his death when he had not died and then returned to his own land where he died.

Antiochus IV DIED he did not go to war against Egypt a third time so the next verses are not speaking of him!

.
.
.
Dan. 11:29-30
At the appointed time he (king of North) will return and come into the south, but this last time it will not turn out the way it did before. :30; for the ships of Kittim will come against him; therefore he will be disheartened, and will return and become enraged at the holy covenant, and take action, so he will come back and show regard for those who forsake the holy covenant.
.

This was Demetrius II Nicator ('victor'):  Seleucid king, ruled from 145 to 138 and again from 129 to 125 BC.   Demetrius tried to take Palestine, but Hyrcanus regained control by concluding a treaty with Rome.   This section of history is also written about by Josephus, Antiquities of the Jews - Book XIII chapter 8-12.
and also (1 Macc.8:17-32) (1 Macc.7:5-9)
.

.
The Seleucus Empire slowly self destructs caused by civil wars within the kingdom, which iweakened it and made the way for Rome to conquer what remained of the empire in 63 BC. The last of the Ptolemy Dynasty was conquered in 30 BC. The lands of old Babylon for the most part remained in the hands of the Parthians,  the last kingdom/horn of the east in the Ram and goat vision.

But this prophecies reference to the Seleucid's Empire ends at this point because they were no longer a threat to Israel.

Rome is not counted among these verses in Daniel 11 because they did not rule from the land of the two rivers, where old Babylon was located as all the previous Kings of the North in this Prophecy had ruled over Israel from.

IN OTHER WORDS, ROME WAS NOT A KING OF THE NORTH; THEREFORE, IT IS NOT LISTED AMONG THE VISION OF THE KINGS OF THE NORTH !!
.
In the next verse God tells of a new kingdom of the North which captures Jerusalem at a time when the Jews will occupy the land of Isreal. A kingdom which will spawn the the last days beast,  but is also from this same land of the North making them kings of the North. This area is now Muslim.

Reference to the Grecian Empire ends here,
and the Islamic Empire (next king of the North ruling over Israel) Begins.

.
Dan. 11:31
"And forces from him (the north) will arise, desecrate the sanctuary FORTRESS, and do away with the regular sacrifice. And they will set up the abomination of desolation.
.
Some teach that this is the Romans in 70 AD and some think it is Antiochus in 168 BC. Some think it hasn't happened yet.
The most important thing is to understand that the abominations in Dan 9:27, are not the same as the abomination of desolation in Dan 11:31.  This is not a full destruction of the Temple and city, it is only a desecration of the fort on the Holy Mount.

DESECRATE =02490 chalal {khaw-lal'}
AV - begin 52, profane 36, pollute 23, defile 9, break 4, wounded 3.

In 70 AD it was the full destruction of the temple and the city by the Romans, not just a polluting of themIn fact we know that the Roman's destruction of the temple isn't even mentioned in this vision because no where in this vision is the temple ever talked about as being destroyed. Of course that is as it should be since this is a record of events concerning the Kings of the North and South, and Rome was neither. It also wasn't Antiochus IV because he was much earlier in the chronology of these verses as I have already shown.

No history for either the Rome, or Antiochus, records anything to fulfill the events in the vision of Daniel from this point forward.

I believe that these things concern the Muslim empire, the 7th head, who were the next Empire to arise in the Middle East and rule over all these lands of the former heads.
As this 7th head of the beast the Islamic people have desecrated the Temple Mount Fortress and the city of Jerusalem.
.
Dan 11:32-35
And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do [exploits]. :33 And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, [many] days. :34 Now when they shall fall, they shall be holpen with a little help: but many shall cleave to them with flatteries.
:35 And [some] of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make [them] white, [even] to the time of the end: because [it is] yet for a time appointed.
.

These next verses explain what kind of god they will worship.
.
Daniel 11:36
"Then the king will do as he pleases, and he will exalt and magnify himself above every god and will speak monstrous things against the God of gods; and he will prosper until the indignation is finished, for that which is decreed will be done.
.

Islam magnifies its beliefs above all other gods and speaks against the God of gods. Islam speaks false things such as:

He will remain in Israel and on the Holy Mount until the indignation is finished.
.
Dan. 11: 37 -38
"He will show no regard for the gods of his fathers or for the desire of women, nor will he show regard for any other god; for he will magnify himself above them all.  "But instead he will honor a god of fortresses, a god whom his fathers did not know; he will honor him with gold, silver, costly stones and treasures.

We still see that the Muslim worship a god of force today and kill many Jews and Christians. They await the Mahdi to come forth and lead them to victory over the whole earth.

The last exploits of the king of the North
The 8th head which is revived from the 7th

In Daniel, the angel tells Daniel about what will take place in the end of days:  This is about a time when the Jews are back in their land!

Dan 7:25 And he shall speak [great] words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

Dan 11:40
And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.

The king of the South always pushed at the North from Israel. So this battle will take place there.

Dan 11:41
He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many shall be overthrown:

This means the king of the North will enter Israel. The king of the North always included the lands of Syria and Lebanon so these countries will be a part of this attack.

Dan 11:41 continues
...but these shall escape out of his hand, [even] Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.

Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon are the country of Jordan today.

Below we see that Egypt, although Islamic, will be under attack by other Arab nations. Why? For two reasons. First, because the Egyptian government (where the treasure is kept) have an agreement with Israel that if Israel is attacked by an Arab country they will fight on the side of Israel. Second, because Egypt represents the leaders of the Arab world and the Arab world tends to listen to them. For the King of the North to take the position as Leader of the Arab world through conquering Israel he must get rid of the Egyptian rulers.

Dan 11:42 -43
He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape. :43 But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians [shall be] at his steps.

Egypt will be attacked by two of her neighbors and they will take control of the government of Egypt and become the force against Israel through the Sinai.

In Dan. 11: 40-44 we see what the last king of this Northern kingdom will do in the end days.

Historically, the King of the South is Egypt and the king of the North was located in the Babylon area and included Syria and Lebanon in its kingdom. In the middle was Israel. It was under the rule of one or the other as a spoil of war over and over again. The wars of kings of the North and kings of the south were most often fought in Northern Israel in what God calls the valley of decision, also called Armageddon.

1. The South must push at the North. If a Caliphat is set up in Iraq after the US pulls out then one muslim nation that will not want this will be Egypt. I would expect them to try and put down this Caliphate.
2. Libya and Ethiopia must attack the government of Egypt. Egypt will be conquered.
3. The North must attack Israel. After conquering the nations that haven't willingly joined him this Caliph will then come at Israel a great force.

Also see the Gog Magog war, because it is probably the same war as this one.

Dan 11:44
But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many.  :45  And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.

He takes Jerusalem and will meet his end because of it.

Now at the time of this last king of the North the resurrection/rapture will take place, as we see in the beginning verses of Chapter 12.

Dan 12:1
And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation [even] to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. :2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame [and] everlasting contempt.
